The STAR question
If your notice says STAR, a regular station can't help you.
When the DMV directs your vehicle to a STAR station, only a STAR-certified station can issue the certificate of compliance you need to renew. Everywhere else will test your car and hand you a certificate the DMV won't take.

Drive it 15 minutes first
A warm engine and hot catalytic converter burn cleaner. A car driven straight from a cold start fails tests it would otherwise pass.
Check engine light off
An illuminated check engine light is an automatic fail on any OBD-II vehicle. No exceptions, no way around it.
Fix it before you test it
If you already know something's wrong, repair it first. A failed test goes on your record and follows the vehicle.
Leave emissions equipment alone
Tampered or missing emissions components fail on visual inspection before the analyzer is ever connected.

What is a Test Only Station?

Who needs a smog check?
Your DMV renewal notice tells you whether one is required to re-register. In most of the state, vehicles need a smog check every two years, when they’re sold, and when they’re first registered in California.
Do I really need one for my vehicle?
Not every vehicle does. It depends on the type of vehicle, the model year, and where it’s registered. Some vehicles only need a check when they’re being sold, or when they’re being registered in California after coming from another state. If you’re not sure, call us with your plate and we’ll tell you.
What's the difference between a regular station and a STAR station?
A STAR station can issue a certificate of compliance to a vehicle the DMV directed to a STAR station. A non-STAR station cannot — it can test your car, but the certificate won’t be accepted for that renewal. Non-STAR stations can still test and certify vehicles that weren’t directed.
Does a test-only station charge more?
It used to be the case. Test-only stations can’t earn anything from repairs, so historically they charged more for the inspection itself. Competition has changed that — and there are plenty of directed vehicles to go around. Our price is $41.75 plus the $8.25 state certificate.
How can I help my vehicle pass?
Maintain it according to your owner’s manual, and don’t tamper with emissions control equipment. Beyond that, a good 15-minute drive before you arrive warms up the emissions components and genuinely helps on the analyzer side of the test.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
We’ll explain exactly why it failed and what your options are. You’ll need the vehicle repaired and then retested before your registration can be completed. Because we’re test-only, we won’t be the ones repairing it — which means the diagnosis you get from us is straight.
How do I look up my vehicle's smog check history?
The California Bureau of Automotive Repair website lets you enter a license plate or VIN and pull the vehicle’s inspection history.
What is the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP)?
You may qualify for up to $500 toward repairs if your vehicle requires a smog check at a test-only station and failed. Separately, the BAR’s retirement program offers eligible motorists $1,000 to voluntarily retire a high-polluting vehicle — if repairing it isn’t worth it, the state may buy the car.
